In Virginia, a parent has a duty to provide support and maintenance for his or her child until the child reaches the age of majority. The age of majority in Virginia is 18 years old. However, this rule is subject to a number of exceptions:
1. A written agreement between the parents that extends the duty to support their child past the age of 18 years old.
2. If the child is severely and permanently mentally or physically disabled, unable to live independently and support himself, and resides in the home of the parent seeking child support, then support may be provided until any age.
3. If the child is a full time high school student, not self-supporting, and living with the parent seeking support, then support will continue until the child reaches age 19 or graduates from high school, which ever come first.
